生于堪萨斯州戈塞尔。曾在威奇塔大学、加利福尼亚大学攻读。此外还在帕萨迪纳戏校受过训练。1959年初次拍片。1960年，因在影片《楼梯顶上的黑人》中有出色的表演获奥斯卡最佳女配角奖的金像奖提名；1962年因《青春的爱侣》再获此项提名。由于对好莱坞的不满，60年代中期转向舞台。她第二次结婚后就居住在英国并出现在英国电影、电视中。
