The War

战争

This is a true story.

Yvette and Sol were high school sweethearts in Yugoslavia during World War Two. They

met when they were 12, fell in love, and planned to marry once he graduated from high

school.

The war started to get bad during Sol's last year of school about 6 months before he and Yvette were supposed to wed. Yvette's parents, who were fearful for their daughters safety,sent her to the nearest big city, over 100 miles away. Sol stayed in the village and planned to bring Yvette back home after he finished school.

Sol eventually graduated, and by that time the war had gone out of control. He decided that could not bring Yvette back to their small village because she would not be safe. So, Sol set off to the city to join Yvette. Two days after Sol left for the city, his village was attcked and Yvette's family was taken away to concentration campus.

Once Sol got to the city, he was unable to find Yvette. He contacted the people she had been staying with and was told that they had sent her on to another city for her safety. So, Sol found work and was saving up to join Yvette once again. After about three months in the city, Sol himself was taken to a concentration camp.

Yvette continued to travel from city to city, staying with relatives until they no longer thought it was safe to stay. Two years had passed since she left her small village. A year and a half had past since she heard from Sol or her family. Eventually, she too was taken to the camps.

When the war ended and Yvette was freed, she looked for her family and found they had not survived. Saddened but happy to be alive, Yvette made for the United States. She was given passage on a boat to the US.

On board the ship, on the way to the United States, Yvette saw Sol. They had found one another after all those years. They rekindled their love and are still together today.

I have never seen two people more in love.

I have never seen two people closer.

I have never seen two people more destined to be together.

Their love inspires me.

Love Notes

From the time each of my children started school, I packed their lunches. And in each lunch I packed, I included a note. Often written on a napkin, the note might be a thank you for a special moment, a reminder of something we were happily anticipating, or a bit of encouragement for an upcoming test or sporting event.

In early grade school they loved their notes-they commented on them after school, and when I went back to teaching, they even put notes in my lunches. But as kids grow older they become self?conscious, and by the time he reached high school, my older son, Marc, informed me he no longer needed my daily missives. Informing him that they had been written as much for me as for him, and that he no longer needed to read them but I still needed to write them, I continued the tradition until the day he graduated.

Six years after high school graduation, Marc called and asked if he could move home for a couple of months. He had spent those years well, graduating Phi Beta Kappa magna cum laude from college, completing two congressional internships in Washington, D.C., winning the Jesse Marvin Unruh Fellowship to the California State Legislature, and finally, becoming a legislative assistant in Sacramento. Other than short vacation visits, however, he had lived away from home. With his younger sister leaving for college, I was especially thrilled to have Marc coming home.

A couple weeks after Marc arrived home to rest, regroup and write for a while, he was back at work-he had been recruited to do campaign work. Since I was still making lunch every day for his younger brother, I packed one for Marc, too. Imagine my surprise when I got a call from my 24?year?old son, complaining about his lunch.

"Did I do something wrong? Aren't I still your kid? Don't you love me any more, Mom?" were just a few of the queries he threw at me as I laughingly asked him what was wrong.

"My note, Mom," he answered. "Where's my note?"

This year my youngest son will be a senior in high school. He, too, has now announced that he is too old for notes. But like his older brother and sister before him, he will receive those notes till the day he graduates-and in whatever lunches I pack for him afterwards.

When Love Beckons You

When her love beckons you, follow him, though his ways are hard and steep. And when his wings enfold you, yield to him, though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.And when he speaks to you, believe in him, though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning. Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun, so shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

But if, in your fear, you would seek only love’s peace and love’s pleasure, then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love’s threshing-floor, into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears. Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not,nor would it be possessed, for love is sufficient unto love.

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself. But if you love and have desires, let these be your desires:

爱别无他求,只求成全自己。但如果你爱了,又有所渴求,就让这些成为你的所求吧:

To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.

To know the pain of too much tenderness.

To be wounded by your own understanding of love.

And to bleed willingly and joyfully.

To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;

清晨,带着一颗生翼的心醒来,感谢又一个充满爱的日子;

To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy;

午休,沉思爱的心醉神怡;

To return home at eventide with gratitude;

黄昏,带着感激归家;

And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart.
