I believe in our future

I believe in our future
Honorable Judges, fellow students:
Good afternoon!
Recently, ther is a heated debate in our society. The college students are the beneficiaries of a rare privilege, whoreceive exceptional education at extraordinary places. But will webe able to face the challenge and support ourselves against allodds? Will we be able to better the lives of others? Will we beable to accept the responsibility of building the future of ourcountry?
The cynics say the college students are thepampered lost generation, which would cringe at the slightestdiscomfort. But the cynics are wrong. The college students I seeare eagerly learning about how to live independently. We help eachother clean the dormitory, go shopping and bargain together, andtake part time jobs to supplement our pocket money.
The cynics say we care for nothing other thangrades; and we neglect the need for character cultivation. Butagain, the cynics are wrong. We care deeply for each other, wecherish freedom, we treasure justice, and we seek truth. Last week, thousands of my fellow students had their blood type tested inorder to make a contribution for the children who suffer from bloodcancer.
As college students, we are adolescents at thecritical turning point in our lives. We all face a fundamentalchoice: cynicism or faith, each will profoundly impact our future,or even the future of our country. I believe in all my fellowclassmates. Though we are still inexperienced and even a little bitchildish. I believe that we have the courage and faith to meet anychallenge and take on our responsibilities. We are preparing toassume new responsibilities and tasks, and to use the education wehave received to make our world a better place. I believe in ourfuture.

Change The Ingredients Of Your Life
This is a glass of water, tasteless, right? However if you add sugar, it will taste sweet, but if you addvinegar, it will become bitter. The same is true with our life____the flavor is created by our choices.
If kindness is added to a strange you will have afriend; but if hostility is added, you will have an enemy. If loveis added to a pile of red bricks you will have a home, but ifhatred is add to those bricks , you will have an concentrationcamp.
So my dear friends, never complain that life isboring and the world is disappointing. If don’t like the taste ofyour life, change the ingredients.
Three year ago, I weighed more than 100 hundredkilograms which caused significant embarrassment and frustration inmy life. Like always failing my P.E examinations, like always beinglaughed at by girls, like being terrified to speak in public. Itwas my grandmother’s encouragement that revived from my passiveattitude to become confident in myself. She said “ My dear, if youcan’t change you figure, why not treat it as your own style. So Ibegan to cautiously employ the new way of thinking. By choosing tochange my outlook on life, I developed the confidence to make adifference and finally I found a totally new world.
So my dear friend, if faith, hope, love, endurance are added to your life, you will find the confidence toconquer your limitation and embrace new challenges. And hopefullywith my speech included, you will have a fantastic speechcontest.

The East and the West, Let’s enjoy thecombination of the two cultures?
Kipling said:“East is east, and west is west, andnever the twain shall meet!” But now, a century later, they havemet.
They have met in business. They have met ineducation. They have met in the arts. Some people will argue thatthese meetings will leave us with a choice between east and west, but I believe that the best future lies in the creative combinationof both worlds. We can make western ideas, customs and technologyour own, and adapt them to our own use. We can enjoy the best ofboth worlds, because our tradition is, above all, one of selectingthe best and making it our own.
I love Beijing and Hennan opera because it alwaysreminds me of who I am. But I am also a fan of pop music, especially English songs. So I have combined eastern melody withwestern language. It is called western henna opera.
When two cultures meet, there may be things inone culture, which do not fit into the tradition of the other. Whenthis happens, we need to learn to understand and respect thecustoms of another culture. Then there are certain things somepeople may not like. To this, I will say, if you do not like it,please try to tolerate it. To learn to tolerate what you personallydon’t like is a great virtue at a time when different cultures mixand merge. Before us, there are two rivers, eastern and westerncultures. At present, they may run in different courses. Buteventually, they will converge into the vast sea of humanculture.
Right now, I can see peoples of eastern andwestern cultures, standing side by side, singing the Olympic themesong: we are hand in hand, heart to heart, together we will shape abeautiful tomorrow! Thank you!

Farewell, Indifference
Who was the most well-known figure in China lastmonth? It’s Ma JiaJue—the college student who murdered 4 of hisroommates. Many people attributed his crime to his poverty anddeficient education. In my opinion, his crime also has much to dowith his classmates’ indifference.
Indifference is a terrible disease in today’scolleges and the whole society. It’s not rare that two students whohave studied together for 4 years have never spoken to each other. It’s not rare that a student who has been absent from class forseveral days is not noticed at all. It’s also not rare that astudent who has severe psychological problems is not cared about atall.
Some people may say ‘What the students withpsychological problems like Ma JiaJue need is not care butpsychotherapy.” However, when people are ill, what they need mostis not only medical treatment, but also care from people aroundthem. Every smile and every caring word will bring sunshine totheir life.
I once heard one of my roommates who was anintroverted girl sobbing at mid-night. Being afraid of disturbingher, I sent a text message to comfort her. The next day, she toldme that she was crying for not being invited to one of her friend’sbirthday party. She thought she was neglected by others. But mymessage was really comforting which told her someone still caredabout her.
What can we do to prevent the tragedy of MaJiaJue from happening again? Some people may say ‘Let’s open morepsychological courses in schools.’ and other people may say ‘Let’sdonate more money for the poor students.’ But I’ll say “My fellowstudent, let’s give more love and care to our roommates, ourclassmates and every person around us!”
14 I Am Tripping My ElephantHere

I Am Tripping My Elephant Here
Once upon a time, a weenie ant was walking on hisway. As he was walking, suddenly he felt the ground shakingterribly. He looked around with his paranoid eyes and saw anelephant walking right behind him. Quickly, the little ant coveredhimself with dirt, but one leg was unfortunately left out. Asparrow saw everything, so she flew down with the purpose ofteasing the ant: “Hey, chicken! Watch out your leg, it’s out!” Theant felt embarrassed at first but then calmly responded: “ Shi…I amgoing to trip that elephant.”
Right now, I’m standing on this glamorous stage. But everything here reminds me of is a not so fun memory. Aroundthis time last year I was in Nanjing competing in another speechcontest. That was the first time for me to be in such a largeevent. Of course the pressure I was under was immense too. After asleepless and stressful night, I went onto that stage without thefeeling in my legs. That speech turned out to be horrible. I don’tremember how I get down from there, but I do remember afterwards Ijust wanted to find a hole to hide in just like the ant in thestory. Back at my school, it took a long time for me to recover. Thanks to all the help I got from my special friends. My confidencewas restored. After rounds of giving speeches and answering toughquestions, I am here today. From all that I’ve been through I’velearned that a good future is based on a forgotten past, if I wantmy life to go on well I have to let go of my past failure. Sotoday, with out fear, I am tripping my elephant again.
13 Hold Fast To YourDreams

Hold Fast To Your Dreams
I have a dream today.
I have a dream that one day every vally shall beexalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the roughplaces will be made plain, and the crooked places will be madestraight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and allflesh shall see it together.
Wow, what a dream it has been for Martin LutherKing. But the changing world seems telling me that people graduallyget their dreams lost somehow in the process of growing up, andsometimes I personally find myself saying goodbye unconsciously tothose distant childhood dreams.
However, we meed dreams. They nourish our spirit;they represent possibility even when we are dragged down byreality. They keep us going. Most successful people are dreamers aswell as ordinary people who are not afraid to think big and dare tobe great. When we were little kids, we all dreamed of doingsomething big and splashy, something significant. Now what we needto do is to maintain them, refresh them and turn them into reality. However, the toughest part is that we often have no ideas how totranslate these dreams into actions. Well, just start with concreteobjectives and stick to it. Don’t let the nameless fear confuse theeye and confound our strong belief of future. Through our talents, through our wits, through our endurance and through our creativity,we will make it.
Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is abroken-winged bird that cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams, for whendreams go, life is a barren field frozen with snow. So my dearfriends, think of your old and maybe dead dreams. Whatever it is,pick it up and make it alive from today.
12 Make Every MomentCount

Make Every Moment Count
One night, I complained to my mom about the lackof time. Finally she said,"you are short of time just because youwaste precious minutes on complaints and anxiety. The point is, nomatter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard, you canalways fit in some thing more."
It is the same with filling the jar. Even if youplace a dozen fist-sized rocks and a bucket of gravel into the jar, there is still space for sand and water between the rocks andgravel.
The lack of time is just the excuse for mynegligence of every single minute. I believe that the greatdividing line between success and failure can be expressed in sixwords,"I did not have enough time."The fact is I do have exactlythe same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller,Pasteur, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein. The point is I havenever touched upon the real meaning of life which lies insnatching, seizing and enjoying every minute of it. No idleness, nodelay, no procrastination, no complaint! It is during my moments ofcomplaining or hesitation that my destiny is shaped. Once I makefull use of every moment, I believe that, my worries will begradually cut down to nothing.
Time is the most valuable of all our possessions, but the most perishable as well. As Henry David Thoreau said,"Youmust live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find youreternity in each moment."
Whenever I fell the lack of time in the future, Iwill tell myself "Carpe diem , seize the day, make every momentcount."
11 Beggars Today

Beggars Today
Beggars are one of the most familiar groups inevery city. They accompany us from our childhood until now, andI've found both the beggars and I change in this journey.
Years ago as a little girl, when I came acrosssome old and disabled beggars on the road, I'd donate some pocketmoney to them, happily thinking I was helping.
s I have grown older, I've found the number ofbeggars has grown larger and they are more diverse. They appear inevery corner of the city, on the overbridge, on the street, nearrestaurants, and even at your door. In contrast with the old days,it seems like the situation with beggars today is more complicated, which has made me hesitate before deciding whether to help them ornot.
It's hard for me to give them money consideringsome who appear beggars in day time but dress up and go to fancyrestaurants at night; and some who are controlled by some illegalorganization and the money they get all goes to the organization. If I help them, I'd be making the problem worse, I'd be doing harmto the society, indirectly. But it's also hard not to give themmoney, considering there're real beggars who really need help. If Idon't help them, who will? And where is my sympathy?
What hurts me the most is not how hard it is todistinguish the real help-seekers from the many false ones, butthat some children are forced by adults, sometimes even theirparents, to beg. They grow up despised by the world, out ofmainstream society. When I see their eyes filled with desperationand impudence instead of purity and innocence, my heart sinks. Wedon't know how they will face the world when they grow up, how thiswill shape their characters, and what they may do to the society,to perpetuate this cycle of violence.
Months ago the Fu Jian government has promulgateda new policy to deal with 8 kinds of beggars. An internet surveyshows that over 80% of voters reacted positively toward the policy. We know that one single policy cannot solve a problem as complex asthis one, but we do look forward to some improvement. I wish allhumanity can live like human.
10 My Views on ReceivingEducation

My Views on Receiving Education
In my early years, I did not see the value ofeducation.
When I was going on thirteen, I started to run myown shop. From then on, I worked hard to become a successfulbusinessman.
One day I realized the importance of the Englishlanguage in the business world and started taking nightclasses.
I was able to communicate well with foreigncustomers after two years of English study. But I started to feelthat, in the long run, having a limited knowledge of English wasnot enough to make my business successful. I knew that only a well-rounded education could guarantee my success in the future.
When I was eighteen, I had to make a decision tocontinue doing business or go back to school. There was oneobstacle keeping me from getting an advanced education. I had onlycompleted elementary school up to that point. I then went back tosenior high school after four months of tutoring in differentsubjects. Being at school for the first time after so many yearswas somewhat embarrassing because my classmates were at least twoor three years younger than I. I concluded that my age did notmatter. The important thing was getting into college.
I took the College Entrance Exams. Although mymath exam result was only one point below the required score. Inever gave up hope. The following year, I took it again andreceived the highest score in my city. Achieving such an amazingresult gave me encouragement and courage necessary to continue myeducation to the next step.
I am now in my second year of college and knowthat it is never too late to learn. My passion for studying andimproving myself will never come to a halt as long as I continue tolive.
“Live and Learn.” is the motto I have adopted. Ibelieve with an education I will succeed. So, if you are wonderingwhether education is important, don’t hesitate a moment to step upand seize the opportunity.
英语风采大赛半决赛演讲稿8 Change(大学成人组)

Change
Leo Tolstoy once said, everyone thinks ofchanging the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.
He is right. We always have great plans anddreams in our minds… too ready to achieve something grand thatchanges the world or benefits all of mankind .For example; we hatepollution and have made up our minds to find new energy sourcesthat keep the environment clean. Yet we still litter on the ground. We complain about traffic jams, so we plan to build more highwaysto solve the problem, but it never occurs to us that our failure tofollow traffic regulations is the leading cause of this situation. We are so concerned that the violence in the media has a bad impacton our children, we urge the government to set laws to protectthem. But, do we, as adults, set a good example for our kids? Weuse nasty words and even spit on the ground in front of them, Idare to say, we harm more!
In my opinion, before we decide to change theworld, we had better change ourselves first. As ordinaryindividuals, we do not have the power to change the world. But wecan change our habit of littering, spitting, cussing, we canrespect the environment around us, we must act as good models forour kids.
If each of us does all of these little things, all of us, millions and millions of individuals together, togetherwe will be strong …strong enough to change our world!
So please, the next time you do something, thinkhow your actions influence not only you, but those around you too, especially our children …and perhaps more importantly…ourplanet!

No One Can Be Perfect
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Today I wantto tell you a story about one of my friends, a lovely and smartgirl who is always ready to help others. Being our grade leader, she is good at both work and study. In many people's opinion, sheis excellent and perfect. But one day she told me she was gloomyand insecure. People around her considered her outstanding andflawless, thinking she could handle everything. But the more shethought about herself, the more disappointed she became. She foundthat she was far from perfection. Last week, she didn’t do well inher French quiz, and the day before yesterday, she was late for aconference. She felt depressed and frustrated, because she failedto be a perfect girl without any mistakes.
I was surprised to hear that for I thought shehad every reason to be confident. However, the expectation ofperfection has become a burden to her. I told her no one could beperfect and I suggested she find her own position.
In fact, people are so eager to be perfect thatthey demand too much of themselves. They want to be special andunique, and they want to have no defects or weaknesses. However, wecan never avoid mistakes and errors. It’s impossible for us to be asuperman or a superwoman. No matter how successful we are, thereare always some flaws. If we hold that everything should beperfect, we would be overcritical.
My friend now has changed her attitude. Sheaccepts her shortcomings but still keeps a positive outlook. She iseven more active and doesn’t allow the mistakes to hinder herpursuit of excellence. And I think that’s the way we shouldbe! That’s all. Thank you!

Never Give Up
“If I could reach higher, just for one moment totouch the sky…”---this is from my favorite song Reach.
When we are appreciating the passionate melody ofGloria Estefan, we could hardly imagine that she could return tothe stage after her paralysis. In the year 1990, this Cuban singerwas knocked down in a traffic accident, and the doctor declaredthat she might never walk again. But Gloria did not give up andkept up constant exercising. Just one year after the disaster, shestood up again and presented this encouraging song at the AtlantaOlympics.
Whenever I think of Gloria, I can’t helprecalling my memory seven years ago, when I first entereduniversity. Naturally shy, ordinary looking, average scores instudy, just like an ugly duckling, I seemed to be the leastoutstanding one in my class. And the successive failures in thebeginning led me into despair. “Am I destined to take the back seatto others?” Unwilling to submit to the fate, I paid more efforts onmy study as well as many other activities, film dubbing, recital, drama… cause I just want to catch every little opportunity to provemyself. Constant effort yields sure success. Thanks to thecompetition, I received some awards and most of all, I gained thecourage and confidence to face any difficulties in my lifejourney.
Life is just like farming, and what you can reapdepends a lot on your sowing and dedication. Once you have a dream, don’t be hesitant. Your next difficult step may be the one to thetop. Keep going forward, even in the toughest time, and never giveup.
3 The Importance of KeepingOptimistic
The Importance of Keeping Optimistic
Honourable judges, ladies and gentlemen,
Good afternoon! Today I would like to talk aboutthe importance of keeping optimistic. When we encounterdifficulties in life, we notice that some of us choose to burytheir heads in the sand. Unfortunately, however, this attitude willdo you no good, because if you will have no courage even to facethem, how can you conquer them? Thus, be optimistic, ladies andgentlemen, as it can give you confidence and help you see yourselfthrough the hard times, just as Winston Churchill once said, “Anoptimist sees an opportunity in every calamity; a pessimist sees acalamity in every opportunity.”
Ladies and Gentlemen, keeping optimistic, youwill be able to realize, in spite of some hardship, there’s alwayshope waiting for you, which will lead you to the ultimate success.Historically as well as currently, there are too many optimists ofthis kind to enumerate. You see, Thomas Edison is optimistic; ifnot, the light of hope in his heart could not illuminate the wholeworld. Alfred Nobel is optimistic; if not, the explosives and theprestigious Nobel Prize would not have come into being. And LanceArmstrong is also optimistic; if not, the devil of cancer wouldhave devoured his life and the world would not see a 5-time winnerof the Tour De France.
A rose may be beautiful, or maybe not; thatdepends on your attitude only, and so does success, so does life.Hindrances and difficulties do exist, but if you are optimistic, then they are only episodes on your long way to the throne ofsuccess; they are more bridges than obstacles! Now I prefer to endmy speech with the great British poet Shelley’s lines: “If wintercomes, can spring be far behind?” Thank you!
2 What College Education Means to Me
What College Education Means to Me
The title of my speech is “What college educationmeans to me”.Now reflecting on the past two and half years of mycollege experience, I come to realize how much it has shapedme.
For me, college education is a marvelousship-builder who designed me from kneel plates up.
With great vision, college education has equippedme, first with a powerful propeller----the sophisticated knowledgein certain field and wide exposure to other disciplines. Bydedicating myself to the engineering courses in the day andimmersing myself in the rich banquet of the world literature atnight, I’ve amassed the driving force for the future and enrichedmy soul.
Besides, college education has also provided mewith a precise compass----the sense of social responsibility. Howcan I best serve the interest of the public while achieving myself-fulfillment? My one year’s experience as a part-time Englishteacher has testified: to be valuable to society as well as to findmy place, I have to possess some actual strength and the ability tofunction well in the most challenging situation. Amid the hecticschedule that balances club activities, sports, and academiccourses, I feel the rhythm and beauty in the intensity of myhigh-pitched life, knowing that I ’m on the right way.
And more importantly, college education has setup not only single ships, but also fleets with common destinations.By interacting with friends of common beliefs, I’ve acquired skillsof relating to other people.
Now ,as a ship about to make my maiden voyage,I’m still not in the position to tell what’s waiting ahead of me,but with a powerful propeller, a precise compass and ardentcompanions of sailing in the sea of society, I’m ready to be agreat sea-explorer.
Thank you.

Our common destiny
“ We are made wise not by the recollections ofthe past but by our responsibility for the future”
----George Bernard Shaw
China is faced with some enormous challenges asit enters the 21st century. In order to ensure the prosperity ofour nation and its future generations we must confront andultimately solve these challenges.
Some of the more pressing issues facing China areuniversal. These include environmental degradation, over populationand the effects of globalization.
To overcome some of the things we need toimplement include:
Enhancing our scientific and industrialtechnologies in such areas as IT, Bio- tech, AI andCybernetics.
Further develop public infrastructure in underdeveloped regions.
Promote education reform at all levels.
Introduce sustainable developmentinitiatives.
The implementation of free trade agreementbetween China and ASEAN.
The benefit to China in introducing theseinitiatives will be significant and far-reaching. It is importantto realize that these initiatives need to filter down through allelements of the society in China. For instance, cutting edgetechnologies and intellectual properties; the development ofe-commerce based economy; an education system that encouragesinnovation and creativity; increased foreign investment; higherliving standards; more efficient use of natural resources.
It is important for us to realize these reformsare both essential and necessary. These will help China to fulfillits vast and unrealized potential on the world stage. It will alsocontribute more to a globalized world of the new century.
As for the future our task is not to foresee butto enable.
(1)提高并增强我们的科学及产业技术,如在信息技术产业,生物技术领域,人工智能以及神经机械学领域;
(2)加快推动欠发达地区的公共设施建设;
(3)促进不同层次的教育改革;
(4)使可持续发展的观念深入人心;
(FindingMe-time is Important)
Hello, Dear teachers and fellow students. It is my honor to be hereon this beautiful Friday morning to share with you my view on “Me-time”.
In my opinion, finding me-time is important. Withthe development of the modern society, we students in China havemore and more pressure. We have to spare every minute to study veryhard and join various kinds of out-of-class training courses toimprove ourselves. So we are really in lack of me-time which ishelpful to keep ourselves from being over-stressed、tired andworried.
I do not have as much fun as before and I alwaysmiss my childhood. Three hours of homework and two piano lessonsone day make me have hardly any me-time to relax myself. I was oncean active basketball player on my school team. But now, basketball,my best friend, I haven’t touched it for almost two months. Me-time seems to have become a luxury.
Last week, when I heard there was going to be abasketball match between our school and No 1 Middle School, I wasso excited that I rushed home and told my parents the news. I askedmy father, “ Dad, may I play basketball after school ? The coachsays I am the best guard in our school. If I join the schoolbasketball team, we are sure to beat No 1 Middle School this time.”My father showed his dispproval and said, “ Of course you can’t .I’m disappointed at you. Why do you have such a sillyidea? Don’tforget to work hard on your schoolwork and piano lessons.” In myparents’ points of view, playing basketball is a waste of time.
As far as I’m concerned, the school assignment tothe junior school students is too heavy. To grow into healthy andwell-rounded adults, we should be allowed to have more me-time forrelaxation. The pressure put on our students by excessiveschoolwork can cause serious stress, which is unhealthy physicallyand mentally.
My dear teachers, I hope you can assign lesshomework so we students can enjoy a period of me-time. My dearparents, would you please not follow me and remind me of study allthe time? Please trust me that I will do my best. My dear friends, why not stop for a while from your heavy homework and do anythingyou like? It’s me-time. I do think, that a reduction of the currentheavy load would be beneficial to us students and to the society asa whole. Finding me-time will make our life rich, colorful andrewarding.
Thank you for your attention!
Finding me time isimportant(琳)
Hello, my dear friends, it is my great honor to behere and give a speech. Today I want to talk about the importanceof finding *me time*.
May I begin my speech by asking you a question? Doyou often feel tired, stressed or worried? If you do have theseproblems, you are lack of me-time to relax yourself. Psychologisttell us that stress is caused by too much work or study , heavyresponsibilities , and quickened pace of life . In my point ofview, if you want to have a healthy mind and body, having your ownme-time is very important.
Let me take myself as an example. I was a carefreeand outgoing girl before I entered the junior high school. I hadmuch me-time and did anything I like after class. I kept a lovelypet and whenever I have time I played with her happily. However, the situation is quite different now. When I want to turn on theTV、surf on the internet or go out shopping with my friends, myparents always look at me seriously and say “ Don’t forget to spendmore time on your lessons. If you don’t cherish every minute ofyour time, other students will catch up with you.”
So, every day, every moment, I am overwhelmed byall kinds of assignments. I become more and more silent and can’tsleep well before the exams because I’m dressed and worried aboutmy results. I feel so tired and how I want to have me time to relaxmyself. I long for a period of time that I could walk in a smallpath in the countryside, sing my favourite song and smell theessence of nature.
My dearfriends, having your own me-time is important. I firmly believethat achievements depend on our health. If we want to have a moreharmonious state to work better, we should find more *me time* andkeep off the overwhelm stresses. Talks, jokes, games, fresh air orbeautiful scenes will be helpful for you. Trust me, you’ll be morerefreshable and energetic.

Every time when people talk about InnerMongolia, they’ll come down to the vast grassland. Yes, the InnerMongolian prairie area makes up a quarter of the total grasslandarea of the country. On the boundless expanse of the InnerMongolian prairie are living numerous sheep, Cattle and horses, onwhich our Mongolian have lived for generations. That is why thegrassland is eulogized as “cradle of life”. There are two vastgrasslands in my hometown—Hulun Buir Grasslands and Xilin GolGrasslands which are both world-famous regions. People in InnerMongolia are famous for their bravery, enthusiasm and hospitality. No mater where you are from, as long as you come to a herdsman’shouse, you will be warmly entertained with roasted whole lamb andmilk tea, and what’s more, you can also appreciate beautifulMongolian songs and elegant dances. It is not exaggerating to sayMongolians are born singers and dancers. The moment you set yourfeet on the grassland areas you will discover it is indeed a realland of songs and dances.
Today’s Inner Mongolia still maintains her ethniccharacteristics and at the dame time, she tries to keep pace withthe development of the modern world. Ordus is a worldwidewell-known brand, Yili and Mengniu are both the famous dairyindustries, which have greatly improved the living standard of ourMongolian people. And I’m sure, our Mongolian people will makegreat effort to contribute to our hometown. As a college student, Iknow quite clearly that my mission is to master solid knowledge andone day do good to my beloved hometown.
23 I can hadle it

I can hadle it
I can never forget the summer in 1996. I wentthrough an extremity of despair due to my failure in the NationalCollege Entrance Examination. It seemed that my dream of being auniversity student would never come true. One evening my fathercame and told me the story of Steven Callahan, who was crossing theAtlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank.It was a miracle that he survived and was found 76 days later(thelongest anyone has survived a shipwreck on a life raft alone).Later in his narrative he wrote these sentences “I tell myself Ican handle it .Compared to what others have been through I’mfortunate”.
Hearing these sentences I felt somethingimportant struck me. I belived my life would mot be that bad and itwas proved to be true. Later during my study in the university Ialways told myself “I can handle it” when my own goals seemed faroff or when my problems seemed too overwhelming and every time Isaid it ,I always came back to my senses.
Now I work as an English teacher in a middleschool. Whenever my students complain about their difficulties instudy or want to give up, I will tell the same story of Callahan tothem. I just want to make them believe they can handle theirdifficulties because their circumstances are only bad compared tosomething better. But others have been through much worse. Thenthey will build up fortitude.
So here, coming to us from the extreme edge ofsurvival, are words that can give us strength. Whatever you’regoing through, tell yourself you can handle it. Compared to whatothers have been through, you’re fortunate. Tell this to yourselfover and over, and it will help you get through the rough spotswith little more fortitude.

Me and my Fears
Honorable judges, distinguished guests, ladiesand gentlemen:
It is a great honor and pleasure to be here onthis beautiful Saturday morning to share with you my sentimentsabout life and passion for the English language.
About a year and a half ago, I took part in myvery first English Speech Contest. When I stood before themicrophone with all eyes starring directly at me, I could hardlyspeak. I stood there, embarrassed and helpless, struggling in vainfor the right thing to say. My fears had paralyzed me.
While my passion for English has never changed, Ilost my courage to speak in public. When my professor againencouraged me to take part in this Competition, I said “no.” Icouldn’t endure yet another painful experience. He looked mestraight in the eye and said something that pierced my heart. Iwill never forget his words. “Look,” he said, “We all have ourfears, and you have yours. You could twist your ankle in abasketball game, but then be afraid to ever play again. Runningaway can never dispel your fears, but action will. A winner is notone who never fails, but one who never quits.”
I spent a whole day with his words twisting andturning in my mind. Then I made the bravest and wisest decision ofmy life: I would face my fears – and take part in thecompetition!
As it turned out, my dear old professor wasright. Now, here I am, once again standing before a microphone. Myheart is beating fast, and my mouth is dry, but most importantly, Ihave faced my fears -- and that makes all the difference!
Thank you.
20 Knowledge collaboration andall-round education

Knowledge collaboration and all-roundeducation
Ladies and gentlemen,
We engineering students take it for granted thattechnology is changing incredibly fast. We are thinking nervouslyand seriously whether our colleges are failing to provide afoundation in the skills currently needed in industry. Take mymajor telecommunications for example. Scientists say that 21stcentury is a biomedical time, not an electrical time. But withoutthe help of electronic data processing and transformation, biomedical technology alone cannot go too far. Funny enough, theword biomedical itself is just a combination of two disciplines. Sothe interdisciplinary exploitation serves as the critical part forour electric and electronics world as well as any other fields tofind new way of being.
But the power of knowledge collaboration iscertainly not restricted to science and engineering; it is in thefull community of learning. Walking around campus I absorbed areality that there is a seamless web between students fromdifferent professional backgrounds. The engineering students arediscussing animatedly in a philosophy lecture, speakingpassionately in the public speaking club, and looking for sparklingideas from learning history and arts. How wonderful that is! That, ladies and gentleman, is just a significant step forward to bewell-rounded because once we jump out of the circle we can see thebigger picture.
My friends, I hope that you have already got whatuniversity is all about. Please let me end my speech with the NobelPrize winner Li Zhengdao’s words: “The realization of the perfectcombination of science and engineering, science and arts, technology and humanity, is the greatest symbol of a university’ssuccess.” Thank you.

The Future Is Now-The Choice is yours
As two men were about to be sent into prison, thewarden let each of them make a demand. The American loved smoking,so he wanted three boxes of cigars; while the Jew said all heneeded was a telephone to contact with people outside of theprison. Two years later, the first out was the American who stillhad many cigars in his hands and pockets but was crying: “Give mesome matches!” Then the Jew walked out, he shook hands with thewarden and said: “Thank you for the phone, it made my businessincrease by 200%.”
What do you think of this story? Life today iswhat you’ve decided years ago, and so is the future: your decisionstoday will affect your destiny years later. Now I have two thingsto choose from: to go abroad, to find myself a decent job aftergraduation or to further my study as a postgraduate. I haven’tworked out an answer to this question yet, but I know that whateverI do will directly affect my future.
An Indian once said life is just like a game ofcards, the cards in your hand represent opportunities, while theway you play decides the result you’ll get. Looking back inhistory, during World War Ⅱ, Churchill who led the British peopleresolved to expect “blood, toil, tears and sweat”. They won thevictory then. Today Shenzhou 5 took the first Chinese astronautinto space. I am sure that later there’ll be more spacecrafts, likeShenzhou 6,7 and 8 ……
So what does the future look like? No one cantell. But I know the choice is yours, the future is now. Make gooduse of everyday, a man can achieve greater successes, a country cangain prosperity and the whole world can be united, as it has neverbeen before.

LIFE IS A CHOICE
In our daily lives, we have many choices to make, such as what to eat for supper, what clothes to wear, or what to doon weekends. At certain times in our lives, we need to make evenmore critical choices, such as which school to attend, what job totake or who to choose as husband or wife. Yes, life is a matter ofchoice. Seemimgly, it means a choice of tangible things. But inessence, it means choosing a way of life. Life is to be lived, savored, and enjoyed, not to be wasted or complained about.
Hardly can we forget the time when our societyfaced the grave threat from the life-and-death disease--SARS. Yet,even during those dreadful times, some afflicted people remainedoptimistic. Instead of wearing neutral white masks, some peopleturned to colouful ones, and thus display a happy mood. And somecreative people dubbed SARS to mean "SMILE AND REMAIN SMILING." Iwas deeply touched by their optimisim, nearly forgetting that we'restill in a battle. people who survive these kinds of circumstances,(at some point)decide in their minds to carry on in spite of theoverwhelming odds.
laid-off workers, typically regarded as thevictims of economic advancement, are subject to desperation thatbeing unmeployed has brought on them. But, encouragingly, we havewitnessed some of them striving hard to rebuild confidence towardlife and discover new opportunities for demonstrating theirvalues.
Although we cannot choose our appearance, inborngifts and even avoid unexpected disasters and adversities, we dohave the privilege to choose to live optimistcally,to love ourlives, to have dreams, and to cherish hopes.
Every morning when we get up, we have a choice ofhow we want to approach life that day. As for me, I choose to becheerful.
The House Debates Health Reform-
Good afternoon, everybody. I justwant to say a few words about the landmark vote that the House ofRepresentatives is poised to(随时准备着) take today -- a vote that canbring us one step closer to making real the promise of quality, affordable(支付得起) health care for the American people.
For the better part of a year now, members of theHouse and the Senate have been working diligently(勤奋地) andconstructively to craft legislation that will benefit millions ofAmerican families and millions of American businesses who urgentlyneed it. For the first time ever, they've passedbills through every single committee responsible forreform. They've brought us closer than we haveever been to passing health insurance reform on behalf of theAmerican people.
Now is the time to finish thejob. The bill that the House has produced willprovide stability and security for Americans who have insurance;quality, affordable options for those who don't; and lower costsfor American families and American businesses. And as I've insisted from the beginning, it is a bill that is fullypaid for and will actually reduce our long-term federaldeficit(赤字,不足).
This bill is change that the American peopleurgently need. Don't just take my word for it.Consider the national groups who've come out in support of thisbill on behalf of their members: The ConsumersUnion supports it because it will create -- and I quote -- "a moresecure, affordable health care system for the Americanpeople."
The American Medical Association and the AmericanNurses Association support it on behalf of doctors and nurses andmedical professionals who know firsthand what's broken in ourcurrent system, and who see what happens when their patients can'tget the care they need because of insurance industrybureaucracies(官僚政治).
The National Farmers Union supports this billbecause it will control costs for farmers and ranchers(牧场主), andaddress the unique challenges rural Americans face when it comes toreceiving quality care.
And the AARP supports it because it will achievethe goal for which the AARP has been fighting for decades --reducing the cost of health care, expanding coverage for America'sseniors, and strengthening Medicare for the long haul.
Now, no bill can ever contain everything thateverybody wants, or please every constituency(选区) and everydistrict. That's an impossibletask. But what is possible, what's in our graspright now is the chance to prevent a future where every day 14,000Americans continue to lose their health insurance, and every year18,000 Americans die because they don't have it; a future wherecrushing costs keep small businesses from succeeding and bigbusinesses from competing in the global economy; a future wherecountless dreams are deferred or scaled back because of a brokensystem we could have fixed when we had the chance.
What we can do right now is choose a better futureand pass a bill that brings us to the very cusp(尖头,尖端) of buildingwhat so many generations of Americans have sought to build -- abetter health care system for this country.
Millions of Americans are watching rightnow. Their families and their businesses arecounting on us. After all, this is why they sentus here, to finally confront the challenges that Washington hadbeen putting off for decades -- to make their lives better, toleave this country stronger than we found it.
I just came from the Hill where I talked to themembers of Congress there, and I reminded them that opportunitieslike this come around maybe once in a generation. Most public servants pass through their entire careers without achance to make as important a difference in the lives of theirconstituents and the life of this country. Thisis their moment, this is our moment, to live up to the trust thatthe American people have placed in us -- even when it's hard;especially when it's hard. This is our moment todeliver.
I urge members of Congress to rise to thismoment. Answer the call of history, and vote yesfor health insurance reform for America.
What Is Real Beauty?
It is human nature that all of us should be fond of beauty.Everybody was born with a heart for beauty.
Today in China, with the rising of our living standard, people'srequirement of beauty has been heightened accordingly. Some peoplespare no money or energy on beautiful clothes, fashionable hairstyles, the decoration of their houses and even the improvement oftheir looks. But it seems to me,all these are more or less confinedto the beauty in appearance,or rather, the outward beauty.
In my opinion,we shouldn't only pay attention to beautifulappearance and neglect the beautification of the mind and what weare after should be the perfect unity of the outward beauty and theinner beauty. As we all know,so far as objects and animals areconcerned, there is only beautiful appearance to be mentioned, butto us humanbeings, although the outward beauty really matters, theinner beauty is much more important. This was confirmed by a famousRussian writer in words much like this: "A person is not lovely forbeing beautiful but beautiful for being lovely. "
Here, I'd like to quote two typical instances and I'm sure, my dearfriends, from them you'll find out what real beauty is.
Recently I learned from the radio an unpleasant incident about awell known singer. She is very charming with a sweet beautifulvoice and very famous for singing the song."Devotion of Love". Notlong ago,she was invited to Zhejiang Province to give performance. The moment she was to appear on the stage, she suddenly asked formore reward. Worse still, after her request was satisfied, shedidn't begin to sing at once. Instead, she took her time to countall the money piece by piece. Thus she kept the audience waitingfor half an hour. So when she at last showed up and started to sing"Devotion of Love",a man rose up from his seat and shouted ather,"You don't have any devotion of love. You are not qualified tosing this song ! "Hearing this, the singer stopped singing andbegan to shout abuses with her finger pointed at the man. At thistime the whole audience burst into an uproar.
How disappointed her keen listeners were when they learned this! Itis the singer herself who spoiled her beautiful image in the eyesof others.
Now, I'm coming to another true story. It's about a poor, ordinarylooking old woman. She was a widow without any children, livingbarely from hand to mouth by picking odds and ends from rubbishheaps. However, she took in more than ten homeless orphanssuccessively and managed to bring them up. Every day she laboredfrom morning till night. In order to earn as much money as possibleto raise the children and to keep them in school, she even went to ahospital regularly to sell her blood. She got so weak for the lossof blood that she sometimes fell in a faint on her way home.
When asked why she chose to burden herself with so manychildren, she smiled and simply answered,"Oh,I love children and Ilike to have their company. "
Though the old woman was poor materially, she was full of affectionand rich in spirit. She was loved dearly by her children. She wasalso highly appreciated by the local government, and trulyrespected by people in her community.
Maybe you can't help wondering, "What makes that ordinary woman soextraordinary?" It is nothing else but her inner beauty, her truedevotion of love without any thought of rewarding. What a sharpcontrast there is between the great woman and the selfishsinger]
So,to answer the question "What is real beauty?", I declaredefinitely,it is the beauty lying in one's heart of hearts andembodied in his actions and deeds, that is,the inner heauty!
My definition of success
I am very glad to be here to share with you my ideas of success. What is success? It is what everyone is longing for. Sometimessuccess would be rather simple. Winning a game is success; gettinga high grade in the exam is success; making a new friend issuccess; even now I am standing here giving my speech is somehowalso success.
However, as a person’s whole life is concerned, success becomesvery complicated. Is fortune success? Is fame success? Is highsocial status success? No, I don’t think so. I believe success isthe realization of people’s hopes and ideals. Nowadays, in themodern society there are many people who are regarded as thesuccessful. And the most obvious characteristics of hem are money, high position and luxurious life. So most people believe that ssuccess and all that they do is for this purpose. But the problemis wether it is real success. We all know there are always moremoney, higher position and better condition in front of us. If wekeep chasing them, where is the end? What will satisfy us at last? Therefore, we can see, to get the real Success we must needsomething inside, which is the realization of people’ hopes andideals.
Different people have different ideas about success; cause people’shopes and ideas vary from one another. But I am sure every successis dear to everybody, cause it is not easy to come by, cause in theprocess of our striving for success, we got both our body and soultempted, meanwhile we are enlightened by the most valuablequalities of human beings: love, patient, courage and sense ofresponsibility. These are the best treasures. So now I am veryproud that I have this opportunity to stand here speaking to all ofyou. It is my success, cause I raise up to challenge my hope.
What is success? Everyone has his own interpretation as I do. But Iam sure every success leads to an ever-brighter future. So ladiesand gentlemen, believe in our hopes, believe in ourselves, we,every one of us, can make a successful life!
Wish you all good success!
