爱华网迷迭香、欧芹、鼠尾草和百里香
一年夏天，漫无目的的走在一个美丽的大学校园里，围墙三面，一面是海，白墙、红瓦、大树、绿草，三两学生，每个校园都有的那种扩音器播放的音乐随着海风时远时近的飘荡，《Scarboroughfair》，歌者是原唱保罗·西蒙和加芬·克尔。
Scarborough最早在大约一千年前由Viking(维京)人在英格兰的西北部NorthYorkshire登陆后逐渐成为一个重要的港口。中世纪时期，Scarborough是来自全英格兰甚至还有欧洲的商人经常聚集的一个海边重镇。
Scarborough Fair在历史上是一个从八月十五日开始延续45天的交易集市。在那个年代持续如此之长的集市是很少见的。后来这个集市逐渐冷清衰落，现在Scarborough只是一个默默无闻的小镇了。作为歌曲，ScarboroughFair原是一首古老(大约作于十三世纪)的苏格兰民间谜歌(riddlesong)。那个年代不像现在有版权的说法，因此歌曲的作者没有能够留下姓名。这样的谜歌由漂流各地的游唱诗人(bard或shaper)辗转传唱。因此年深月久，衍化出许多不同的歌词版本。
（注：《斯卡布罗集市》是作于中世纪的作品，原来作者的姓名已经泯灭无法考证了。）
到了20世纪初50年代，英国著名的剧作家和作曲家埃万麦考尔（EwanMacColl）开始收集各种传统民歌，并于最后集成了《漫长的采撷TheLong Harvest》一书里面收录了这首歌曲。不久后这首歌被一位民歌歌手马丁卡西（MartinCarthy）发现，他对此作了一些改编。不过，真正让这首歌曲名扬四海的，无疑要属保罗西蒙（PaulSimon）了。他在英国旅行的时候，无意中从卡西那里学到了这首歌，并最后把它收进了他的组合“西蒙和加芬克尔”（Simon& Garfunkel）1966年的专辑《欧芹、鼠尾草、迷迭香和百里香》中。这张专辑一问世，全世界的人们就为他们在《斯卡布罗集市》里的那种无与伦比的和声所震惊，进而无法自拔地沉陷进去。
西蒙和加芬克尔在这首歌里的和声搭配，简直到了一种难以形容的境界，甚至被誉为有史以来最优美的歌声。《斯卡布罗集市》里想要表达的那种纯情、渴望、温柔在两人的歌声里被发挥到淋漓尽至的地步，令听者无不动容。
除了原来的歌词之外，两人还把自己原来的一首反战色彩的老歌《山坡上》（TheSide of a Hill）编入歌中，作为背景伴唱，形成了经典的《斯卡布罗集市》颂歌版（Canticle），并为之配上了优美的吉他伴奏。在寂静时聆听这首歌，犹如天籁之音回旋空中，旋律在心中缓缓流过，眼前自然浮现出这样的风光：
夕阳迎风，晚笛悠扬，正是金秋时节。小镇上商客云集，炊烟袅袅，热闹非凡。而佳人一袭白衣，在远方伫立，她背后海潮起伏，拍打山崖，碎成朵朵浪花……
英国民歌Scarborough Fair 因Paul Simon 和Art Garfunkel 的演唱和1966出的唱片而广为流传，又因次年电影《毕业生》用了这支歌，更使其不胫而走。
