The Jane Austen Book Club is2007 romantic drama film directed Robin Swicord, who also adaptedthe screenplay from the 2004 novel of the same name which waswritten by Karen Joy Fowler. The film stars Maria Bello, EmilyBlunt, Kathy Baker, Amy Brenneman, Maggie Grace, and Jimmy Smits.The film is about six people from California who form a book clubto discuss Jane Austen novels.
The novel takes place over thecourse of several months in a contemporary university town inCalifornia's Central Valley near Sacramento. Each of the sixchapters is dedicated to one of the six book club members as wellas one of Austen's six works. In turn, each of Austen's novelsparallels the individual characters' experiences with relationshipsand love.
Characters and theircorresponding novel:
Jocelyn (Emma): an independent,50-something dog breeder and matchmaker who organized the JaneAusten Book Club. Jocelyn has been best friends with Sylvia sincethey were eleven and introduced her to her husband, Daniel, whenthey were in high school. She has never married and has nochildren. She originally invites Grigg to the book club forSylvia's sake, but ends up attracted to him herself.
Allegra (Sense andSensibility): the 30-year-old lesbian daughter of Sylvia and herhusband Daniel. Separated from her partner of several years,Corrine, Allegra is an artist and a thrill seeker, having beenknown to sky dive and rock climb, amongst other things.
Prudie (Mansfield Park): a28-year-old French teacher at a local high school. She is marriedto Dean, who she loves, but she becomes confused when witnessingevery-day infatuations between her students, especially when onestudent in particular flirts with her.
Grigg (Northanger Abbey): anoffbeat 40-something, and the only male member of the book club.Grigg grew up the only boy amongst his three older sisters. He isalso addicted to science fiction and coincidentally met Jocelyn ata hotel in which they were attending two separate conventions:Jocelyn, a dog breeding convention, and Grigg, a science fictionconvention.
Bernadette (Pride andPrejudice): a 67-years-young yoga enthusiast and the most talkativeof the members. Bernadette has been married multiple times and isdetermined to "let herself go" with style. Although she is theoldest of the members, she is the most satisfied with herlifestyle.
Sylvia (Persuasion): Jocelyn'sbest friend, Sylvia is also 50-something years old and is goingthrough a troubling separation with her husband Daniel, who hasleft her after thirty years of marriage for another woman. Theirdaughter, Allegra, has come to live with her for the time being.(wikipedia)

Emma is a comic novel by Jane Austen,first published in 1816, about the perils of misconstrued romance.The main character, Emma Woodhouse, is described in the openingparagraph as "handsome, clever, and rich" but is also ratherspoiled. Prior to starting the novel, Austen wrote, "I am going totake a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like."
Emma Woodhouse is a young woman inRegency England. She lives with her father, a valetudinarian who isprincipally characterized by excessive concern for the health andsafety of his loved ones. Emma's friend and only critic is thegentlemanly Mr Knightley, her "neighbour" and brother of hersister's husband. As the novel opens, Emma has just attended themarriage of Miss Taylor, her old governess and best friend. Havingintroduced Miss Taylor to her future husband Mr Weston, Emma smuglytakes credit for their marriage, and decides that she rather likesmatchmaking.
Against Mr. Knightley's advice, shenext tries to match her new friend, Harriet Smith (a sweet butnone-too-bright girl of seventeen, described as "the natural (i.e.illegitimate) daughter of somebody" to the local vicar, Mr Elton,first persuading her to refuse an advantageous marriage proposalfrom a respectable young farmer, Mr Martin. Her matchmaking schemegoes awry when it turns out that Mr Elton, a social climber, wantsto marry Emma herself— not, as she had hoped, the poor and sociallyinferior Harriet. After Emma rejects his proposals, Mr Elton goeson holiday. Harriet fancies herself heartbroken, though Emma doesher best to convince her that Mr Elton (who will reveal himself tobe more and more arrogant and pompous as the story continues) isbeneath them both.
An interesting development for Emmais the arrival in the neighbourhood of Frank Churchill, MrsWeston's stepson, whom she has never met but in whom she has along-standing interest. Mr Elton returns with another newcomer--avulgar wife who becomes part of Emma's social circle, even thoughthe two women loathe each other. A third new character is JaneFairfax, the reserved but beautiful niece of Emma's impoverishedneighbour, the loquacious Miss Bates (another comical character whoserves to lighten the scene). Jane, who is very accomplishedmusically, is Miss Bates's pride and joy; Emma, however, envies hertalent and somewhat dislikes her. Jane had lived with Miss Batesuntil she was nine, but Colonel Campbell, a friend indebted to herfather for seeing him through a life-threatening illness, thenwelcomed her into his own home, where she became fast friends withhis daughter and received a first-rate education. On the marriageof Miss Campbell, Jane returned to her relations, ostensibly toregain her health and prepare to earn her living as agoverness.
In her eagerness to find some sort offault with Jane — and also to find something to amuse her in herpleasant but dull village — Emma indulges in the fantasy, sharedwith Frank, that Jane fancied Miss Campbell's husband, Mr. Dixon,and that it is for this reason she has returned home, rather thangoing to Ireland to visit them. This suspicion is further fueled bythe arrival of a piano for Jane from a mysterious, anonymousbenefactor.
The plot becomes quite complex asEmma tries to make herself fall in love with Frank simply becauseeveryone says they make a handsome couple. Emma ultimately decides,however, that he would suit Harriet better after an episode whereFrank saves her protégée from a band of Gypsies. During this time,Mrs. Weston wonders if Emma's old friend Mr Knightley might havetaken a fancy to Jane. Emma promptly decides that she does not wanthim to marry anyone, but rather than further exploring thesefeelings, she claims that she wants her nephew Henry to inherit thefamily property. When Mr. Knightley scolds Emma for a thoughtlessinsult to Miss Bates, she is privately ashamed, and tries to atone.Around this time, Emma is further discomfited when she learns thatJane and Frank have been secretly engaged for almost a year. WhenHarriet confides that she thinks Mr. Knightley is in love with her,jealousy forces Emma to realize that she loves him herself. Shortlythereafter, Mr. Knightley proposes to Emma, Harriet reconciles withher young farmer, and everyone lives happily ever after.(wikipedia)

Elinor and Marianne are the daughtersof Mr. Dashwood by his second wife. They have a younger sister,Margaret, and an older half-brother named John. When their fatherdies, the family estate passes to John and the Dashwood women areleft impoverished. Fortunately, a distant relative offers to rentthe women a cottage on his property.
