Generation gap refers to the distance and contradiction betweenthe old and the young because of lack mutual understanding. It is acommon issue around the world, and if not properly settled, it willlead to serious social problems.
Most sociologists believe that generation gap, in fact, reflectsthe different value sysytems supported by the old and the young.Generation gap may result from different attitude toward theconstant changes of the world. Generally speaking, the old peopletend to stick to traditional principles and beliefs and thus theyare reluctant to embrace new ideas and new things; while the younggeneration is always keeping pace with fashion and changes of theworld and views the old generation as outdated, stubborn and odd.And under most circumstances, there lacks a mutual respect andcommunication between the two generations, which will result indifference, disagreement, confrontation and even hostility withinfamilies.
Geneartion gap is natural, but should be paid considerableattention to. If we are unable to deal with it smartly, it willonly deepen the misunderstanding between the young and the old, andconsequently it will devastate the social and domestic relationsand disturb the social orders.
Views onStyles of Living
Some people enjoy living together with their parents after theyhave grown up. They hold the opinion because, living with theirparents, they can take better care of their parents and vice versa.Meanwhile, they can turn to their parents for help if they get intotrouble or have some difficulties. To them, life in a big familyseems to be more enjoyable than in a small family.
Others, however, prefer to live separately. They cherish theidea to be independent of their parents, seek more freedom and wishto have a place of their own, in which they can do what they like.Besides, they don’t want to be overprotected by their parents butlong for a chance to face the society by themselves, no matter whatit is.
As to me, I like an independent life style in spite of the factthat I love my parents. Different generations have different lifestyles and values. What one generation likes may not be anothergeneration’s fondness. Living separately, each generation can enjoydifferent values. In addition, by leading an independent life, Ican train my character and develop my own ability to deal withthings encountered in my life.
Smooth AwayGeneration Gap
Nowadays there is often a lack of understanding between parentsand children. As children grow, they turn bit by bit away fromtheir parents. And a generation gap is formed. What accounts forthis?
First of all, owing to their different age, experience and wayof thinking, they have different tastes. Children enjoy pop music,dance and fashion clothes. They like travelling around and tryeverything new. On the contrary, parents enjoy a quiet and peacefullife. They hesitate to accept the new. They want their childrenalways to study at home. Second, parents and children misunderstandeach other too much. Parents think that their children are alwaysyoung and need protection. They always find faults with theirchildren. But childern pay little attention to their parents’advice. They regard their parents as something out-of-date andburdensome. They have already grown up. Wthat they need isindependence not protection.
To smooth away generation gap, for parents, they should treatthe children as their friends rather than small babies. They shouldpay more attention to their concerns, interests, feelings andthoughts. For children, they should respect their parents and knowthat they need, indeed, their parents’ advice and help.

A few years ago it was fashionable to speak of ageneration gap. Parents complained that children didn't show themproper respect and obedience, while children complained that theirparents didn't understand them at all. Many critics argue that itis built into the fabric of our society.
One cause of the generation gap is theopportunity that young people have to choose their own life. Intraditional socieries, children live in the same area as theirparents, marry people their parents know and approve of, and oftencontinue the family occupation. In our society, people often moveout of the home at an early age, marry or live with people theirparents have never met, and choose occupations that are ratherdifferent.
In our upwardly mobile society, parents oftenexpect their children to be better than them. However, theseambitions for their children are another cause of the divisionbetween them. Often they discover that they have very little incommon.
Finally, the speed of change in our society isanother cause of it. In a traditional culture, people are valuedfor their wisdom, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetimemay become out of date. The young and the old seem to live in twovery different worlds, separated by different skills andabilities.
No doubt, the generation gap will continue to bea feature of our life for some time to come. Its causes are rootedin the freedoms and opportunities of our society, and in the rapidpace at which society changes.

The principal differences between my generation andmy parents‘ generation are in how they relate to others。 Mygeneration is more tolerant of other people‘s choices， lessconcerned about what others think， and more self－centered。
My parents‘ generation has stricter standards aboutwhat kinds of behavior are acceptable。 They sometimes have a hardtime accepting the fact that other people may have different ideasabout what‘s right and what‘s wrong。 My generation thinks peopleshould have a lot of choices。 For example， they choose whom theywant to live with， whether or not to have children， whether or notto practice a particular religion， and what to do for a living。
My parents （generation is much more concerned aboutwhat other people think of them。 Many grew up in tightly knitcommunities where people knew each other‘s families。 Fitting inmeant that you had to act a certain way。 Many of my generation grewup in loosely knit communities， where we only knew about ourclosest neighbors。 We didn‘t care what the rest of the communitythought of us。 Also， we were a very rebellious generation and oftendid things just to shock people。
Wherever we grew up， most of my generation didn‘thave to worry about having enough to eat or a roof over our heads。My parents‘ generation did。 They grew up during the GreatDepression， when many people were poor。 For this reason， my parentsdidn‘t have time to analyze their feelings or think about theirinner selves。 They were too busy trying to get by。 Children of mygeneration were well taken care of by their parents。 Because ofthat， we had time to think about ourselves and our place in theuniverse。 As adults， many of us have continued to be self－absorbed。We join health clubs to be perfect in body and go into therapy tobe perfect in mind。
When I think about our actions， it seems that my parents‘generation is more "outer" directed and my generation is more"inner directed。"
