In its simplestform a triumphal arch consists of two massive piersconnected by an arch, crowned with a flatentablature orattic on which astatue might be mounted or which bears commemorative inscriptions.The main structure is often decorated with carvings, sculptedreliefs and dedications. More elaborate triumphal arches may havemultiple archways.
Triumphal arches are one of the most influentialand distinctive types of architecture associated withancient Rome.Thought to have been invented by the Romans, the triumphal arch wasused to commemorate victorious generals or significant publicevents such as the founding of new colonies, theconstruction of a road or bridge, the death of a member of theimperial family or the accession of a new emperor.
The survival of great Roman triumphal archessuch as the Arch of Titusinspired many post-Roman states and rulers, up to the present day,to erect their own arches in emulation of the Romans. Arches in theRoman style have been built in many cities around the world, mostnotably the Arc de Triomphein Paris, the Siegestor in Munich andthe Wellington Archin London.
