This is an example of a defensive foul for blocking while in theRestricted Area. The Restricted Area is the area within the archedline on the court below the rim. It applies to secondary defendersand was established to ensure offensive players have room to driveto the basket without allowing defensive players an unfairadvantage in drawing an offensive foul. To be considered legal andto draw an offensive foul, a secondary defensive player must haveboth feet established completely outside the Restricted Area line.On this play, the secondary defender's right heel is on theRestricted Area arc.

This is an example of a defensive foul for blocking. The RestrictedArea is the area within the arched line on the court below the rim.It applies to secondary defenders and was established to ensureoffensive players have room to drive to the basket without allowingdefensive players an unfair advantage in drawing an offensive foul.On this play, the secondary defender is positioned inside theRestricted Area, and while he successfully jumps vertically, hedoes not make an active
attempt to defend the shot. In order for a secondary defenderwithin the Restricted area to legally defend a shot attempt, thedefender must jump vertically while also making an active attemptto block the shot of the offensive player. On this play, while thedefender in the Restricted area does jump vertically, he does notmake an active attempt to defend the shot attempt of the offensiveplayer.

This is an example of an offensive foul for charging, with adefender legally positioned outside the Restricted Area. TheRestricted Area is the area within the arched line on the courtbelow the rim. It applies to secondary defenders and wasestablished to ensure offensive players have room to drive to thebasket, without allowing defensive players an unfair advantage indrawing an offensive foul. To be considered legal and to draw anoffensive foul, a secondary defensive player must establish legalposition prior to the offensive player starting his upward shootingmotion, and the defender must have both feet established completelyoutside the Restricted Area line. On this play, the replay clearlyshows that the secondary defender did establish legal positionprior to the offensive player starting his upward shooting motion,and his feet are completely outside the Restricted Area.
