1955年12月1日，一位非洲裔美国女裁缝在阿拉巴马州蒙哥马利市（Montgomery）一辆城市公共汽车上拒绝给一名白人乘客让座，由此给我们国家带来了永久改变。当时，在工作了一整天后只想回家的罗莎·帕克斯（RosaParks）可能没有打算创造历史，但她的对抗激发了一场运动，加速了我们通向正义和人人平等的进程。

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION
On December 1, 1955, our Nation was forever transformed when anAfrican-American seamstress in Montgomery, Alabama, refused to giveup her seat on a city bus to a white passenger. Just wanting to gethome after a long day at work, Rosa Parks may not have beenplanning to make history, but her defiance spurred a movement thatadvanced our journey toward justice and equality for all.
Though Rosa Parks was not the first to confront the injustice ofsegregation laws, her courageous act of civil disobedience sparkedthe Montgomery Bus Boycott — 381 days of peaceful protest whenordinary men, women, and children sent the extraordinary messagethat second-class citizenship was unacceptable. Rather than ride inthe back of buses, families and friends walked. Neighborhoods andchurches formed carpools. Their actions stirred the conscience ofAmericans of every background, and their resilience in the face offierce violence and intimidation ultimately led to thedesegregation of public transportation systems across ourcountry.
Rosa Parks's story did not end with the boycott she inspired. Alifelong champion of civil rights, she continued to give voice tothe poor and the marginalized among us until her passing on October24, 2005.
As we mark the 100th anniversary of Rosa Parks's birth, wecelebrate the life of a genuine American hero and remind ourselvesthat although the principle of equality has always beenself-evident, it has never been self-executing. It has taken actsof courage from generations of fearless and hopeful Americans tomake our country more just. As heirs to the progress won by thosewho came before us, let us pledge not only to honor their legacy,but also to take up their cause of perfecting our Union.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United Statesof America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by theConstitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaimFebruary 4, 2013, as the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of RosaParks. I call upon all Americans to observe this day withappropriate service, community, and education programs to honorRosa Parks's enduring legacy.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this first dayof February, in the year of our Lord two thousand thirteen, and ofthe Independence of the United States of America the two hundredand thirty-seventh.
