Dancerehearsals can go on past midnight, but this time I stopped at ten."I hope you don't mind," I said, looking up into space, "but that'senough for today."

A voice from the control room spoke. "Youokay?"

"A little tired, I guess," Isaid.

I slipped on a windbreaker and headed down the hall.Running footsteps came up behind me. I was pretty sure who theybelonged to. "I know you too well," she said, catching up withme. "What's reallywrong?"
我快速穿上皮夹克，朝大厅走去，有脚步声快步跑向我。我很确定是谁来了。“我太了解你了，”她好所。她已赶上我，“到底怎么回事？”
I hesitated. "Well, I don't know how this sounds, but Isaw a picture today in the papers. A dolphin had drowned in fishingnet. From the way its body was tangled in the lines, you could readso much agony. Its eyes were vacant, yet there was still thatsmile, the one dolphins never lose, even when they die..." My voicetrailed off.
沉吟片刻，我说：“这么说吧，不知道你听起来如何，但是我今天看到报上的一张图片，是关于有海豚死在一张渔网里，它浑身上下都被绳网交缠着，你可以看出它曾有多痛苦。双眼是空洞无神了，但嘴角的笑容还在，那是一种海豚即使死了也还保持着的笑容……”我拖长了语气。
She put her hand lightly in mine. "I know,I know."
她轻轻地把手放在我掌中，“我了解，我了解。”
"No, you don't know all of it yet. It's not just that Ifelt sad, or had to face the fact that an innocent being had died.Dolphins love to dance -- of all the creatures in the sea, that'stheir mark. Asking nothing from us, they cavort in the waves whilewe marvel. They race ahead of ships, not to get there first but totell us, 'It's all meant to be play. Keep to your course, but dancewhile you do it.'

"So there I was, in the middle of rehearsal, and Ithought, 'They're killing a dance.' And then it seemed only rightto stop. I can't keep the dance from being killed, but at least Ican pause in memory, as one dancer to another. Does that make anysense?"

Her eyes were tender. "Sure, in its way. Probably we'llwait years before everyone agrees on how to solve this thing. Somany interests are involved. But it's too frustrating waiting forimprovements tomorrow. Your heart wanted to have its saynow."
