Thismovie shows us a story about Andrea Sachs which is an aspiringjournalist from Northwestern University. She gets a job as aco-assistant to the icy editor-in-chief of Runway fashion magazineMiranda Priestly. Despite no real knowledge of fashion, she winsMiranda’s approval finally in her efforts. However she realizesthat she pursues her dream in the opposite direction and she losesher boyfriend and college friends. Thus she leaves Miranda, Runway,and fashion behind.
I’mdeeply impressed by many plots of this movie. Many people may hateand blame the powerful editor Miranda. She is quite hard on Andreaand sacrifices Nigel to keep her own job. Feared by her staff andmany in the fashion world, she seems to live without love.Nevertheless, she cares a lot about her twin daughters. Once shesaid to Andrea, that blue represents millions of dollars and it’ssort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice thatexempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact you’re wearinga sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room.Miranda’s comment makes everybody feel great respect for her. Whileothers regard the fashion as a tool of earning money, Mirandarespects for fashion as Chinese ancient swordsman treat his sword.Her success is the achievement of career at the expense of personaland family goals. Due to her commitment in business, we admire andappreciate her outstanding achievement. As her husband, he shouldbe tolerant of these hardships with a spirit of sacrifice.Therefore it is normal for their leaving. Miranda accepts and nevercomplaints.
As ajunior personal assistant to Miranda, Andy puts up with theeccentric and humiliating requests of her boss because, she istold, if she lasts a year in the position she will get her pick ofother jobs, perhaps even the journalistic position she trulycraves. At first, Andy fumbles with her job and fits in poorly withher coworker Emily. As she spends increasing amounts of time atMiranda’s beck and call, problems arise in her relationships withher college friends and her boyfriend Nate. One day, Andy savesMiranda from being embarrassed by Emily at a charity benefit, andMiranda rewards her by offering to take her to the fall fashionshows in Paris instead of Emily. Andy hesitates to take thisprivilege away from Emily, but she is forced to accept the offerafter being told by Miranda that she will lose her job if shedeclines. Pleased by her display of loyalty, she tells Andy sheseems some of herself in her. Andy repulsed, said she could neverdo to anyone what Miranda did to Nigel. Miranda replies that shealready did, stepping over Emily when she agreed to go to Paris.When they stop, Andy gets out and throws her cell phone into thefoundation of the Place de la Concorde. Andy realizes she must makea choice between them and her job lest she become more like thewoman she despises working for.
Manypeople say that Andy is a Cinderella and has her own dream. For mypart, although she turns back to her plain looking, it can notexplain Miranda’s fault or bad fashion. I quite approve of herviewpoint when she enters the company. We can’t change ourselvesbecause of one job. Nowadays many young people lose themselves inthis world of temptation. They lose sight of their dreams and cometo terms with the real world. Andy changes and learns herresponsibilities and begins to dress more stylishly. Her boyfriendis angered by her refusal to admit she’s become what she onceridiculed, and they break up. Most people work to live, not live towork. We should consider working as part of our lives. If we get ajob at the cost of our love, friendship and kinship, we are puttingthe cart before the horse. No doubt working will bring manybenefits to our life, but it can’t replace our families. We canlose our jobs one day, but we can never leave our parents.
Andy’sstory is not a tragedy caused by her boss but a race between twodreams. In the last scene, Andy, dressed casually but with a bitmore style, sees Miranda getting into her car across the street.They exchange looks and Miranda gives a soft smile once inside thecar. Two heroines do not compromise and they continue to pursuetheir respective dreams without hesitation. They appreciate eachother and leave precious memories. All in all, we must have donesomething right, more right than other jumpers before. I believethat hold fast to my dream, and then I can reach the sky!
